About Ancien Wines

Ancien Wines is a Pinot Noir specialist that has been quietly producing some of the finest cool-climate wines in Napa Valley since 1992, sourcing from exceptional vineyards across Northern California to create a portfolio that celebrates the variety's diversity. Founded by Ken Bernards, who fell in love with Burgundy during his travels and set out to explore how Pinot Noir expresses itself across California's different terroirs, Ancien (French for "ancient" or "former") takes a deliberately multi-regional approach, producing vineyard-designate wines from Carneros, Sonoma Coast, Russian River, and other premier cool-climate appellations.

The winery owns no vineyards, choosing instead to maintain long-term relationships with exceptional growers who farm sites ideally suited to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. This negociant model, inspired by the Burgundy houses that Ken Bernards admires, allows him to produce wines from the best cool-climate sites in Northern California without the capital investment of vineyard ownership. The sourcing relationships span decades, and the fruit quality reflects the trust and collaboration between grower and winemaker.

Ken Bernards makes the wines with a Burgundian sensibility, using whole-cluster fermentation, native yeasts, and minimal new oak to produce Pinot Noirs that taste of their vineyard origins rather than their winemaker's preferences. The Carneros Pinot Noir is earthy and structured, the Sonoma Coast bottling is mineral and tense, and each vineyard-designate wine reveals a distinct expression of the variety. The Chardonnay and Pinot Gris round out the portfolio, each handled with the same restraint and transparency.

Tastings are available by appointment, with Ken frequently hosting visitors for conversations that range from Burgundy to Carneros to the philosophy of terroir-driven winemaking. The intimate scale of the operation means that every tasting feels personal, and Ken's passion for Pinot Noir is infectious. The $40 tasting fee is remarkably fair for wines of this quality and specificity.

Ancien matters because it demonstrates that Napa Valley's wine culture is capacious enough to include producers who do not make Cabernet Sauvignon at all. Ken Bernards' decision to focus on Pinot Noir from cool-climate vineyards, while based in the heart of Cabernet country, is a statement about diversity and conviction. The wines are excellent, the prices are fair, and the perspective is one that Napa Valley needs more of.
